I'll disagree with the high reviews. The first book in the series was intriguing and you could see some real promise. This one however does not live up to the expectations I had. The main character is supposed to have 5 loves, but after this (the 2nd book), he still has had only 1 love that I can see (how many books is this series going to be?). In the first book, even though the main character was flawed, you could still see redeeming qualities in him. I know he has to go through trials and tribulations and will be hurt throughout, but he becomes so unlikeable in this book that I lost all caring for him (his cruelty to his child's mother was especially hard to stomach). The plot becomes convoluted and new lands are introduced but previous plot lines aren't resolved. The main character pushes a friend to use his magic despite that character's fear that it will consume him, but the main character never tries to develop his own magic powers that he is led to believe are quite formidable (pretty stupid of him I thought). Using these powers could certainly help him with his revenge. There is a huge focus on man on man rape in this book as well (a book that is not for younger readers in my opinion). This could have been done with more subtlety I think (as the rape was done in the first book). I couldn't really understand why the main character was spending so much time in the city with the army, I felt he should have been trying to escape or trying to come up with plans for revenge earlier (didn't seem true to the character we came to know in book 1). I won't be continuing with this series.Product details

The character development of Kaie really takes a dark turn. The plot thickens, and the story grows ever darker. I love Lyn's writing style. Kaie is as realistic as anyone can be in a novel, making choices that seriously affect his future and those of others. The supporting cast is amazing and I'm glad Vaughan came back. He's one of my favorites ^_^
I read the other reviews, and I'm not sure where one reviewer got the idea that the book centers around man-rape. There's one scene (sorry, spoiler!) and while it affects the tone of that particular chapter and some after, the story moves away from that.
This book is longer and better proof read than the last book (Not gonna lie, some of the last book put me off due to grammar and stuff). And the next book looks like it's going to add a new character. I can't wait!

This was a fantastic second book.... love the characters, love the pace, love the drama.
What I didn't love was discovering the 3rd book isn't even out yet!
I was left hanging!!!
I highly recommend this book as well as the first in the series! It is well written, has great character development and has a great storyline. I can't wait until the next book comes out.
So I've been looking for a new favorite author for a while now. Politics,subterfuge, magic, and a powerful cast of colorful characters round this sequel out very well. I went back and read Burnt(book one) when i realized this was the sequel, and I am glad i did. I can tell the author really took some time to look back on the first book and improve. It can get a little slow at times, but I always find myself wanting to know what impossible situation Kaie will be thrust into next. A must read for those looking for a new take on the fantasy genre
It starts a little slow but soon picks up and the adventures get better, more skullduggery and our hero (or antihero) comes out of the shadows and starts moving and shaking. I would definitely recommend it for the lover of decent fantasy. (which has been lacking of late)
After reading the first book i was eager to get my hands on the second and i was not disappointed .What truly made me love this book was the agony and torture the main character goes through , this is not the happily ever after book where the hero grows up kills the dragon,wins the girl and lives happily ever after.This is a book where the main character struggles towards an unknown future and makes choices that are not always morally right but that makes him more realistic and likable in my opinion( i just hate the goody two-shoes protagonist that just can't do wrong and always solves his/her problems in an nice unrealistic peaceful way).The world is beautifully build and all the characters are well made and realistic . i recommend this book to anyone looking for a quality fantasy read.
